Research
Click here to be taken straight to the research tree.
Research in ShadowOps is extremely important. You can research, new space stations, attack and defence bonuses, new ships, resource bonuses, and even new missiles.
At the very top of the 'Research' page you will see two links, the first saying assign researchers, and the second saying research status.
When you click the 'Research' link you will be taken straight to the 'Assign Researchers' page.
The first thing that you will see on this page is information about your scientists. You will be shown how much population you have available to train into scientists, how many scientists you have available to assign to a task, and finally how many scientists you can afford to train, you will need to pay 1,100 per scientist to train them. It is also worth noting that it will cost you 10 money to disband each scientist. The next thing that you will see on this page is how many sellable research points you have available to assign to research tasks. Finally, below that you will find all of the research tasks that you can currently research. For each research task you will be able to see it's name, how many scientists you currently have researching that task, how many points you have researched in the task with the total amount of points needed to research the task next to it, the percentage that the task is completed, and finally the estimated time that the task will be completed (in revs).
You can also assign scientists, remove scientists, and assign sellable research points to each of the avaiable tasks, to do this you must type in how many scientists you want to assign or disband, or how many sellable research points you want to assign to the task, scroll down to the bottom, and click the carry out orders button (make sure that the drop down box option next to the carry out orders button says what you want it to do, for instance, if you are assigning sellable research ponits, change the drop down box option to assign points).
When you click the 'Research Status' link, next to the assign researchers link, you will be taken to a page that tells you all about your research status. This page shows you every single research task avaiable in ShadowOps. Next to each task you will see one of four words, 'Not Available', this means that the research task is currently not avaiable to research. 'Idle', this means that the research task is available to research, but currently has no scientists researching the task. 'Researching', this means that you currently have scientists researching this task. 'Done', this means that you have already completed this research task.
It is worth remembering that some research tasks cannot be started until it's prequisite task has been fully researched, this will be explained in detail on the research tree. Once you have fully researched a task, it will be romoved from the research list, and you will recieve the benifit for researching it. You can only receive a maximum of 5 million networth from scientists, scientists are worth 1 networth each, meaning that you can only gain networth from your first 5 million scientists.
Research Tasks
Bonuses Research:
You will find 4 options to choose from in this section, they are as follows, population bonus, income bonus, power bonus and sellable research pts. First of all we will talk about the three kinds of bonuses that you can get, the first is population bonus, this is used to increase your population income, the second is income bonus, this is used to increase your money income, and the third is power bonus, this is used to increase your power income. You can only get a maximum of 30% increase in each bonus, there is not a set amount of research points needed to reach this, as it all depends on different factors, which will be shown in the formula below.
Max bonus you can get with your current sellable research points:
Bonus = [sellable research points] / ((platforms * platforms) * 0.00021)
Sellable research points needed for the bonus that you wish to obtain:
Sellable research points = [bonus] * ((platforms * platforms) * 0.00021)
The forth option in this section is sellable research points. These are arguably the best thing to invest your scientists into, the reason for this is simple, there is no limit to the amount of sellable research points you can have.
Let me explain this in a bit more detail, for example, if you have 100k scientists, and you were to place them all on the EMP research task (5 million research points required to complete this research task), it will take you 50 revs to complete this task. There is nothing wrong with doing it this way, but say you don't log in again for another 100 revs, you will lose 50 revs worth of research points, because after a research task is completed, your scientists are made available to be placed on another task, but if you were to place your scientists into sellable research points, you would recieve 10 million research points, enough to research your EMP missiles, and spare to use on another task. The only downside to this is that sellable research points can be stolen via a probe attack (see the 'Probe Room' page of this help site for more information).
Fighters:
In this section you can research more advanced fighters. Once you research the basic ships the more advanced ships will become available (for information on ships please see the 'Shipyards' page on this help site).
Starships:
In this section you can research more advanced starships. Once you research the basic ships the more advanced ships will become available (for information on ships please see the 'Shipyards' page on this help site).
Missiles:
In this section you can research both defensive and offensive missiles. Each missile does something different, so it may be worth looking at the 'Missile Factory' page of this help site for more information on what each missile does.
Weapon research:
In this section you can research both defensive and offensive bonuses for your fighters, starships and turrets. When you have researched a weapon bonus, it will automatically be applied to your ships, information on bonuses gained are shown below.
| Type of bonus | Name of research task | Bonus gained |
Type of bonus | Name of research task | Bonus gained |
Unit offense Turret defence | Torpedoes Mark I | +2% |
Unit defence | Lasers Mark I | +2% |
Unit offense Turret defence | Torpedoes Mark II | +4% |
Unit defence | Lasers Mark II | +4% |
Unit offense Turret defence | Torpedoes Mark III | +6% |
Unit defence | Lasers Mark III | +6% |
Unit offense Turret defence | Torpedoes Mark IV | +8% |
Unit defence | Lasers Mark IV | +8% |
Unit offense Turret defence | Torpedoes Mark V | +10% |
Unit defence | Lasers Mark V | +10% |
Unit offense Turret defence | Photon Torpedoes | +20% |
Unit defence | Dual Lasers | +20% |
Space Station Research:
In this section you can research new space stations. The stations that you can research are power reactors, deterium maker and turret support platforms, for more information on these, please go to the 'Space Stations' page of this help site.
Other Research:
In this section you can research a few other upgrades. The first of these upgrades is the cloak deterctor array, this allows you to build Cloak Seekers, it is worth noting that these are built on your fighter pads. The next upgrade is a cloaking device, this allows you to build cloak bombers (you can only build Superchargers if you don't have shields researched, but as soon as you have researched shields, you will be able to build both Superchargers and Thunderstrucks). The final upgrade in this section is shields, shields give you approximately 10-25% less losses in battles, also, when a missile is fired at you, there will be a 20% chance of the shields disrupting the missiles guidence system and making it self destruct causing no damage to you.
Master Research
Below you will find a list of all the master research tasks, these become availabe when you have researched everything else on the research tree. There are 10 master research tasks, but you can only research a maximum of 5, so make sure you know what you want because you wont be able to change your mind. It is worth noting that as soon as you place 1 research point on a master research task, it is classed and 1 of the 5 tasks you are allowed to research, so be careful.
| Name |
What it does |

| Enhanced Deterium Refining |
You now have an additional +15% Deterium income. |
I have split the ShadowOps research tree into different levels (L), and have explained each level below.
| L1 research | You can research L1 research tasks from the beginning of the round, just so long as you have the sellable research points (SRP's's). |
| L2 research | You can only research L2 research tasks when you have researched all of the L1 research tasks of that particular section. |
| L3 research | You can only research L3 research tasks when you have researched all of the L1 and L2 research tasks of that particular section. |
| L4 research | You can only research L4 research tasks when you have researched all of the L1, L2 and L3 research tasks of that particular section. |
| L5 research | You can only research L5 research tasks when you have researched all of the L1, L2, L3 and L4 research tasks of that particular section. |
| L6 research | You can only research L6 research tasks when you have researched all of the L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5 research tasks of that particular section. |
| L7 research | You can only research L7 research tasks when you have researched all other research tasks. |
